Sure, maybe some of us (OK, I) got all a-twitter over the announcement that a new Tex-Mex restaurant was coming to the Gulch, but it’s important not to forget the sort of local Mexican restaurants that have been here for you in your time of need for years. Like the sorts of places where you can literally buy house-made tortilla chips by the grocery bag and salsa and queso dip by the tub. The undeniable king of popular local Mexican in this town is Las Palmas, and although we may have given Scene readers a little chiding about, you have selected the chain as “Best Mexican” many times over the years in our Best of Nashville issues. It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 29 years since the first of nine Las Palmas restaurants opened on Charlotte Pike on Aug. 20, 1990. The family-owned business marketed themselves the old-fashioned way with free tacos and sodas to attract diners and by passing out flyers to their neighbors. Since then, their empire has grown to eight additional locations: Antioch, Franklin Pike, Hayes Street, Hermitage, Highway 100, Nippers Corner, Nolensville Pike and Rivergate.
Las Palmas partner Jose Luis reflects on the strong support of Las Palmas customers: “We’re not still here because we are lucky; we are here because of them. Our customers mean everything to us.
